An elopement on the Danish island of Ærø. Two people, the sea and a whole day without a schedule.

The vows

In a small circle.

The day began with a quiet civil ceremony and no large audience. A ring, a kiss and two hands wearing wedding bands in front of two smiling faces.

By the water

Across the jetty.

Then we went to the sea. There was plenty of laughter on the jetty, and between two photographs there was often nothing more than a short walk and a conversation.

In the evening

Through dunes
and cornflowers.

Later we walked through dune grass and a field of cornflowers, with the sun almost at eye level. Finally, we stopped at one of the yellow beach huts. The moon was already in the sky.

Why a day
for two feels different.

An elopement unfolds differently from a large celebration. There is no timetable anyone must follow, and nobody waits for the next group photograph. You can see that in the pictures.

For you, it also means feeling less watched. It is easier to hug in front of one person than in front of eighty. Couples who feel nervous about the camera usually settle in more quickly on a day together.

What exactly is an elopement?

An elopement is a wedding for two or with a handful of close people, without a large celebration or a fixed programme. The day follows you and the place, rather than a schedule.

Does an elopement have to take place abroad?

No. Ærø was this couple’s choice. A day together in the Black Forest, in the Alps or close to home can work just as well.

Will you photograph us all day or for only a few hours?

We decide that together beforehand. For an elopement, I discuss with you when my coverage begins and ends so that travel between places does not quietly take up your time together.
